The Italian Gardens
The Italian Garden layout is designed within the historic framework of Sir Charles Barry’s original Italianate Garden of the 19th Century.
The gardens have never stood still at Trentham, and in our approach to restoration it’s important to allow the garden to continue to move forward, not back. We commissioned renowned RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medallist Tom Stuart-Smith, to revive The Italian Garden with one of the largest contemporary perennial plantings in Europe. In the Spring we add pots of colourful tulips followed by early summer colour from the wisteria, bearded iris and roses. The perennial displays are in their peak in late summer and autumn.
Starting in the summer of 2024, we embarked on a transformative project in partnership with renowned landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith, revisiting his original Italian Gardens design. The gardens will be rejuvenated in stages, allowing us to carefully develop different areas of the beds as we progress. This phased approach ensures that the gardens can recover and renew effectively, embracing both horticultural and social benefits.
As we face a changing climate and new challenges for our plants and gardens, our 20 years of experience since the development of the Italian Gardens guides us. This initiative will allow us to renew this central focal point of the gardens, ensuring its longevity for future generations.
Stuart-Smith’s visionary designs will honour the gardens rich heritage while introducing fresh, innovative elements, creating a dynamic landscape where every visit will offer new discoveries. His expert touch will enhance the natural beauty of each season, turning every pathway and vista into a living masterpiece.
